Kearney group pushes for whitewater rafting
Whitewater rafting is not a sport we usually associate with Nebraska, but a group in Kearney wants to change that. The Kearney Whitewater Association has big plans for the Kearney canal.
"This is not something typically that most cities out in the flat lands and plains get the opportunity to do," said Kearney Whitewater Association President Carson Rowh. The Kearney Whitewater Association wants to turn the canal into rapids. The city of Kearney began researching the possibility of turning the Kearney canal into a whitewater park back in 2006. No plans were ever made until now. "I kinda thought it was too good to be true," said Rowh. For Rowh and the other members of KWA, kayaking is a passion. They swipe their paddles in the water of Turkey Creek weekly. The plan is to start the park at the spillway near UNK and lead into the Platte River. "We're hoping that we can get the community behind us; that we can get the major stakeholders behind us like UNK, NPPD and the city of Kearney," said Rowh. They do it by showing people the possibilities first-hand. "Some people think that they can't do it, but anybody can do it," said supporter Courtney Thee. Even on a brisk fall night, the group floats as the sun sets enjoying every moment on the water. "I have yet to ever meet anybody that has spent a day on the water that didn't love it," said Rowh. The association has a presentation with the Kearney Parks and Recreation board next Thursday.
