Kearney holds annual Community Olympics
Track, volleyball, and basketball are just a few classic Olympic sport categories, but Kearney's Olympic games are far from ordinary.
It was a weekend full of fun and healthy activities as the 17th Annual Community Olympics took place in Kearney. A record 879 people made up the 32 teams. The teams competed in events like kayaking, dodge ball, aqua zumba and pickleball. Teams began the competition on Friday and finished Sunday evening with a barbecue and award ceremony. The main event of the Community Olympics was the 5K Run/Walk, which was held on Saturday. Participants say win or lose, it's all about having fun. "We get to hangout with our friends and thats a lot of fun," said participant Jeff Dunn. "Of course there's competition but it's just the friendships we all have, it's just a lot of fun." Since 1996, the Community Olympics introduces people to various recreational activities and facilities, while promoting the importance and satisfaction of living a healthy lifestyle. The community Olympics is sponsored and organized by Good Samaritan Hospital and Kearney Park and Recreation. |
