Kearney says no to chickens
It sounded like a strange agenda item, but Tuesday night Kearney City Council had to decide whether or not to alter the city codes to allow chickens in city limits.
With a four to one vote, council members said no change; no chickens. The discussion started in last July when there were complaints from residents about the types of animals people were keeping in their backyards. That's when the city planner looked up the codes and found conflicting rules. If city council had approved the ordinance change the measure would have gone back to the planning commission to discuss specifics, like numbers and types. Again, city council voted against keeping chickens in backyards. |
