Kearney welcomes first newborn of 2013
Every year on New Year's Day hospitals across the country eagerly await the arrival of the first baby born in the new year. Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney welcomed its first baby of 2013 just after 7:30 Tuesday morning.
Matt and Ashley Weesner welcomed in 2013 from a hospital room at Good Samaritan Hospital. A few hours later, they welcomed another guest.
"This is Ellie Grace, and she is 8 pounds, 13 ounces, and she was 21 1/4 inches long," said Ashley.
Born at 7:36 New Year's Day, Ellie was the first baby born at the hospital in 2013.
"Never in our lives would we imagine sitting here on New Year's Eve," Ashley said.
That's because both mom and dad expected Ellie to come before Christmas.
"Never in my life did I think she would come late let alone be the new year's baby," said Matt.
Ashley was supposed to be induced on Sunday, but because other babies wanted to go into the world, her induction was pushed back until Monday, when they got the call to come in.
"We were definitely excited about that and wondering, well, this could really be a new year's baby," said Ashley.
But they didn't expect to have the first of 2013.
"I really wasn't expecting it; I thought someone else would have gone before me," said Ashley.
Also excited about Ellie's arrival, her big brother Rylan.
"He seems to do well with other babies, but of course they don't live with us," said Ashley.
Ashley and Ellie are expected to be released from the hospital on Wednesday when they'll join Matt and Rylan at home.
"Ellie belly, Ellie belly, that's cute," said Rylan.
For being the New Year's baby, the family will receive a special gift from the hospital and several local businesses.
