Kensington resident meets a Nebraska legend
One local Husker fan got the surprise of a lifetime Saturday evening.
The Kensington in Hastings helped grant one resident's bucket list wish. Kensington resident, Al Behl, got to meet former Husker Coach and Athletic Director, Tom Osborne, and he was pretty starstruck . "I'm glad you came tonight," said Tom Osborne. "I'm kind of surprised, but I'm very pleased," said Al Behl. Eighty six year-old, Al Behl, grew up in South Dakota. But, it didn't take long for him to become a Cornhusker and a Tom Osborne fan. "I watched him all through the seasons," Behl said. He has one favorite memory of watching Osborne. "The one thing that I really remember was one of his last games down at the Orange Bowl when they doused him with Gatorade," Behl explained. "That didn't go over with Tom, I know." Behl brought his grandson to Saturday night's Teammates Event, an Osborne founded youth mentoring program. "He's set a great example for people to live by, young people particularly," said Behl's daughter, Sharon Brooks. Behl is a former teacher. "He's watched his progress all these years as a mentor to young people, and dad really, really admires that," Brooks said. The cherry on top of an exciting night, an autographed copy of Tom Osborne's book. It's a piece of the night Behl can take home. "He's sort of like being reverent in the space of glory," Brooks said. "He just was really awed by it all." Looking past the shock and excitement, there's two guys with the same goal, mentoring youth. Al's daughter told me he was so nervous that he almost backed out of coming Saturday night. He told her, why would Tom Osborne want to meet me? But, he ended up very excited he made it. |
