While obesity is a national epidemic, is a huge problem right here in Central Nebraska. And to help fight it, the South Heartland District Health Department seeks to break bad habits that leads to obesity starting with fourth graders.

Five hundred and thirty students, all fourth graders, from Adams, Clay, Nuckolls and Webster counties all gathered at Hastings College.

From energy balance to understanding food labels, the Community Health Educator of the South Heartland District says students younger than 4th grade would not understand such concepts. But 4th graders are at the prime age for learning.

"They're able to grasp those concepts that we're trying to teach them but fourth grade they've develop some of those habits but we're looking to break those or jump start those good habits," said Community Health Director Desiree Rinne.

This is the 8th year for the Annual Nebraska Kids Fitness & Nutrition Day.

The kids were separated into 14 physical activity stations ranging from step aerobics to soccer shot.
