Answering questions to help Know Your Rights

by Lauren Conley

More than 250 people came together to learn their rights Saturday.

The Hastings Multicultural Alliance hosted Know Your Rights day at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings.

The event offered information on medical, educational, religious and other services in the area.

Alliance representatives said the event was aimed at bringing the Latino community together and giving them a voice.

"I think this is the right time to do work like this," said Juan Gallegos with the Hastings Multicultural Alliance. "To do integrative work, to see your neighbor as your neighbor and not as somebody like an outsider, so it's the perfect time for that and I think it's very needed in the community."

Immigration attorneys gave free consultations to families.

Gallegos said immigration is a pressing issue with Hispanics in the area.

He added many families are of mixed status, meaning some members have proper documentation but not always the entire family.
