GI City Council votes on pension, public works director

It was a big day in Grand Island. The state of the city address Tuesday afternoon and two big agenda items before city council Tuesday night.

Up for approval was the mayor's recommendation for Public Works Director.

His choice, the man who held the position from March 2011 through July of last year, John Collins (he wasn't at the meeting tonight.) But council approved his hiring with a vote of 6 to 4.

Collins' salary will be higher this time around making $101,000.

Also tonight, Council approved the pension payout (8-1) for former police captain and current Hastings Police Chief Pete Kortum.

The value dropped by over $91,000 after it was recalculated on a gender specific basis, following last week's special council meeting.

The recalculated lump sum: $692,000. The city's portion: $172,000.
