New bill proposes extending senators term limits

by Josh Egbert

Nebraska lawmakers could serve three back-to-back terms in office under a proposed constitutional amendment. It would put the issue in the hands of the voters.

Holdrege Senator Tom Carlson introduced the measure to the Legislature's Executive Board Wednesday afternoon.

Nebraska's term limits for lawmakers went into effect in 2006, after voters approved them in 2000.

The current limit bars senators from serving more than two consecutive four-year terms, but allows them to run again if they sit out for one term.

Carlson's proposal would allow lawmakers to serve up to three consecutive terms, if voters approve the amendment.

Nebraska's one-house Legislature prevents lawmakers from seeking office in another legislative chamber, as is common in many states with term limits.

We should add the Speaker of the Legislature is against extending term limits.
