Local families finalize adoptions for National Adoption Day
Saturday was National Adoption Day, which is a day to celebrate recent area adoptions and finalize even more.
News 5's Lauren Conley was at the 10th Judicial District Celebration at the YMCA in Hastings Saturday. She has the story of how three siblings are bringing together two families. Running, screaming, and playing like any typical day. But, one thing is different. These kids now have "forever families." "It's just nice to know that it's final," said adoptive mother, Kim Hamik. Siblings James, Jacquecia and Jaheem were taken from their birth mother over two years ago. It didn't take long to find loving new homes. Tom Fischer and his wife Sarah started fostering James in January of 2010. Jacquecia moved in a few months later. "We fell in love with them right away and thought, if they become available to adopt, that's what we wanted to do," said Fischer. Their youngest brother Jaheem moved into foster care with the Hamiks. The siblings are considered high needs, meaning they require a little extra attention. "The decision was made then to separate the children and not try and keep them together, but keep them close enough together that they can still have a relationship," Hamik said. Saturday morning, both families made their foster kids, their own kids. Eight kids and five families. The Adams County Courthouse is where they make the adoptions legal, but for most of them, that family bond was formed long before the papers were signed. "We felt like Jaheem was already part of our family," Hamik said. The Hamiks are legally Jaheem's parents. While the Fischer's are legally James and Jacquecia's parents. But, they're all part of one family. "Family to us is no longer just those that you give birth to and those that are living in your home," Hamik said. Both, the Hamik's and the Fischer's have had biological children and they both agree that it's similar. "It's the same feeling," Fischer said. "It's that same feeling. I feel like I just had two kids today even though they've been living with us for awhile." "I've had my own children and I've also adopted," Hamik said. "I've had the best of both worlds. And to me there's no difference in the feeling between the two." |
