Local students dress up for future careers
Some local first graders took a look into their future careers Friday. There were a few popular ones. Doctors, teachers and singers, of course. This is a fun way to engage the students in the curriculum.
For these first graders, Friday is like an extra special show and tell. "We get to wear uniforms at our school and we just thought this would have been a fun way for them to tie in a bit of social studies and have a fun out of uniform day for our kids," said first grade teacher Meredith Jones. Everyone got to share their dreams with the class. These kids are just starting to learn to read and write. "This definitely helps them get better at their reading skills and their writing skills and it's always a good idea to tie in social studies to reading and writing," Jones said. Today's lesson ties into the "everything changes" unit. "So, we'll learn how transportation has changed, how communication has changed and this project is hopefully teaching them how they've changed," said Jones. It's a way to look into the past, present and future. Baby pictures start a timeline of each first grader's life. But, the empty future spot on the timeline? "I want to work on people's teeth." "An engineer (What does that mean?) I drive a train." "I'm a singer." That will get filled with pictures from Friday. These kids put a lot of thought into their future careers. One boy wants to be a chiropractor, like his dad. But, the most creative one, I thought, was the spy. |
