Local teens take on Iron Chef competition

Local kids got to participate in their own version of the popular tv show Iron Chef Wednesday. The Grand Island Public Library is making sure kids have something fun to do during holiday break.

News 5's Lauren Conley was there for the Iron chef competition. This is part of holiday break programs through the library.

The Grand Island Public Library is offering activities for children and teens during break. The Iron Chef Competition is a favorite among kids.

Blending, flipping, and stirring to see who can create the tastiest dish.

"I've done the Iron Chef before and I've loved it. It's been a lot of fun," said Abby Anthony.

"Teens especially love food. They love to cook and teens are looking for something to do right now," said GIPL Youth Services Librarian Celine Swan.

Holiday break means no school, but for some kids it also means nothing to do.

"I miss school."

"I'm bored. At home I have nothing to do."

When these kids heard food they came running.

"It's nice because I get to be here with friends. I get to meet a lot of new people. I get to cook with them, so yeah it is a treat," Anthony said.

Three groups compete by making waffles, omelets and smoothies.

"I like cooking and everything and you get to be creative and make random stuff on your waffles and everything. It's just really fun," said Secret Homolka.

Part of the competition is presentation.

"I tried to be creative to make a smiley face on it," said Homolka.

"I'm kind of layering it so it's different. Kind of like a waffle cake," said Anthony.

"He has a beard, and he has ears, and he's got a smiley face."

But, the best part...

"Getting to eat afterwards."

That's something they all can agree on.

Activities at the library go through Friday, January 4th. Programs for kids up to fifth grade are at 10:00 am and activities for teens ages 11 to 18 start at 2:00 pm.
