Authorities are searching for a retired San Francisco firefighter who went missing while traveling on Amtrak's California Zephyr. They think 69-year-old Charlie Dowd could be somewhere in Nebraska.

Dowd left the Bay Area on Wednesday. He last spoke to his son by cell phone Thursday night, saying he was just outside of Denver.

When Dowd's train arrived in Chicago on Friday, he was not on it.

According to a Facebook page set up by his family; his luggage, cell phone, and wallet were found in his sleeping car.

His daughter says Dowd is under a doctor's care and may need medical attention.

Amtrak is investigating the possibility that Dowd got off the train during the night. Among the stops for the train overnight; McCook, Holdrege Hastings and Lincoln.

Amtrak Police said they are working with local police departments at those stops.

Dowd's daughter, Jennifer, flew to Omaha Sunday to look for her father.
The family asks anyone with information to contact police.
