March marks National Nutrition Month
March, among other things, is National Nutrition Month. Mary Lanning registered dietitians Pat McCoy and Jana Wells visited with News 5 on this topic.
Amy West: Pat, I'm going to start with you. What is the biggest issue regarding nutrition that Americans are facing? Pat McCoy: Well, it's obvious. Obesity and the complications that follow with obesity. The increased rate of diabetes. The other thing we find is that people don't know how to cook and they don't know how to grocery shop. We're so tied to convenience foods, fast foods, that type of thing, that we need to back up and go back to basics. Learn how to shop, learn how to pick foods that are in season, that type of thing, as well as how to prepare them. Amy: And it's through a cooperative effort that Mary Lanning Healthcare and Allen's and other organizations are trying to teach people how to do that, correct, Jana? Jana Wells: Yep, we thought we might as well since we have everything we need to do it. Mary Lanning just went with Allen's and gong to try it this National Nutrition Month. Amy: Fantastic. And, Pat, can you tell me a little bit about what this involves? Pat: We're going to have Saturday morning at 10:00 am grocery store tours. We're limiting five people per dietitian so you need to pre-register. The tours will last about an hour. If we've got a real talkative bunch they can go two hours. And then on Tuesday nights, beginning next Tuesday the 12th, we're going to have a 7:00 cooking demonstration at Allen's and we will be showing people how to prepare these foods that they see and what do I do with them. We will be having recipes and also tasting the foods that are prepared. Amy: Passing on that education so people know how to take care of themselves. And, Jana, where can people go for more information to get signed up for this? Jana: They just need to call Allen's or they can call the hospital and the hospital can get them signed up to. Amy: Why is it so important for people to be aware of and get involved in? Jana: I think a lot of people have been told so many things but it's important to get the right information and we can provide that for people. So I think that's important. Amy: Thank you both being here. Once again, National Nutrition Month - keep it in mind as you go shopping this month. |
