The sluggish economy has claimed more jobs - this time, from the largest employer in Adams County. Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital announced it will be laying off 37 workers.
These layoffs take place will take place pretty quickly. It is happening gradually over the course of this week.
Now Mary Lanning has stood here as the mecca for medical services in this community for nearly a decade. And it has been more than 3 decades, since it has had any number of layoffs like this.
"It is just a sad day for everyone here at Mary Lanning. It has been a family for 95 plus years, but anytime you impact the people you work with closely, it is a sad day," said Mary Lanning CEO Brad Neet.
37 employees will be let go. It is a day hospital officials feared would come, but hoped they could avoid.
"What we have seen is a decline in volumes recently over the past few years both in patient and out patient volumes," Neet said.
Not only that - the hospital has seen a drop in medical reimbursements from insurance companies and government agencies. That is hundreds of thousands of dollars lost, possibly even millions, eventually translating into cuts, not in physicians but just about every sector. These range from maintenance to labs, clerical to administrative.
"A couple of vice president positions, we have also made changes in our management structure, we have fewer directors than we had," said Neet.
But Mary Lanning said it continues to look after its own helping all of 37 employees rebound from their loss.
"We are doing everything we can to minimize that impact by helping them with workforce development with a severance agreement. We think this is fair and we will do everything we can to help shepherd them to a new job," said Human Resources Vice President Bruce Cutright.
As for the hospital's job, they still have close to a thousand employees, and officials assure the community, they will see no change in service.
Nebraska Work Force Development will hold training sessions next week for employees that were let go.
