Meat packing plant death surrounded in mystery

Tools

Monday News 5 reported that a Hastings meat packing plant was being fined almost $200,000 for safety violations that resulted in the death of a worker. But there is more to that story.

Even though it's been six months since the accident at Nebraska Prime Group, no one seems to know the name of the dead employee, who was pulled into a machine at the plant.

County Attorney Donna Fegler Daiss says her office didn't respond to the accident scene. And, as county coroner, she didn't sign a death certificate since the victim died at a hospital.

Hastings police responded to the accident scene, but apparently never filled out a report.

Hastings fire transported the victim to Mary Lanning Hospital, never listed the victim's name on any paperwork.

The company's not talking and neither is OSHA.

News 5 is working with the Attorney General's public records division to get some answers. We'll keep you posted.
