Millenium Kids: Education tips for your growing child

Tools

by Jeniffer Berry

A child who is ready to read by the time he or she gets to school will be more successful in the classroom. And the Hastings Public Library is helping give parents the necessary tools to make that happen.

You're looking at the first in a series of "Every Child Ready to Read" workshops. It's being taught by Children Librarian Kathy Schultz.

She says from birth to 5 years old there are 5 practices to develop language and literacy skills. All things you can do together and at home. They're: talking, singing, writing, playing and, most importantly, reading to your child.

"Sharing books with them. Modeling that books/reading is important. And helping them learn that you read from left to right, how a book works, talking about what's in the pictures," said Schultz.

Schultz says the 5 practices help develop vocabulary and also help to spark the imagination.

If you missed the workshop it will be repeated Sunday, February 17th from 2 to 3 at the Hastings Public Library.

The workshops are free and registration is not required.
