Minden citizens erupt over proposed strip club
It's a business proposal that has an entire town up in arms. The Minden City Council heard the proposal earlier this week but did not approve or deny the business license.
That's because there's no ordinances prohibiting this particular type of business. They are referring to a proposal to open a strip club in Minden.
It's a quaint little town of just under 3,000. The gym and pharmacy line the old town square. You can hear children playing during their lunch break.
But the talk around town isn't about the upcoming election or the latest gossip. It's about business, one particular business.
"I'm not for it at all," said Jeanne Johns.
Earlier this week, Jonathan Canterbury proposed his business plan to the city council. That plan, an all-nude juice bar, is just a block west of downtown.
"I feel like there's too many kids that are around this area; it is close to three churches and the elementary school," Johns said.
Canterbury didn't want to go on camera, but says he didn't expect so much attention. He says he was looking for a building for a new business. He already owns a similar place in Elm Creek and this one happened to become available.
"From what I hear, he's going to be open from 7:00 to 4:00 in the morning and, it's like, anybody that's there until 4:00 in the morning, it can't be good," said Johns.
The city can't stop Canterbury from opening his establishment called Confessions because no ordinances currently exist to prohibit an adult entertainment night club.
But that doesn't stop residents from having their concerns.
"Every year we put on the "Light of the World" Christmas pageant and I have a real problem with a Christmas pageant going on and strippers half a block away," said Johns.
Canterbury says the windows on the building will be tinted and only those 18 years or older will be permitted inside.
Canterbury says he hopes to have the business up and running within the next 30 days.
