Grand Island city council to propose tax raise

No one likes to raise taxes. But, in Grand Island they need money and at Tuesday night's study session city council will look at ways to increase increasing taxes to help bring in more revenue.

Finance Director Jay Monter intends to present two plans to the council.

The first would increase the cell phone occupation tax by three cents.
That is expected to generate $486,000 more per year.

The second option is raising property taxes.

"We have to have the departments have so much money and we have a gap of $353,000 that needs to be solved," said Monter.

Monter says the city needs $965,000 to maintain the current level of services and requests for capital improvement.

Tuesday night is only a study session on the matter, but Monter hopes the council can make a decision at the next city council session.
