October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Grand Island's VocRehab is celebrating this month and bringing more awareness to disability employment through a couple different activities.

Charlene Johnson: We are going to be having an open house technically all next week - Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. For clients to come in and enjoy food and see our new office there in Grand Island. And we are having a ribbon cutting with the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce there on Friday.

Amy West: That is Friday the 12th at 10:00 am. And where are you located in Grand Island?

Charlene: We're at 203 E Stolley Park Road, Suite B.

Amy West: In the Silverwood Plaza over there. Tell us a little about Nebraska VocRehab and what you do.

Charlene: Nebraska VR is our new name. We're going to be rolling that out. We work with people with disabilities. We work with people who have a learning disability, we work with people with emotional disability. That could be mental health, bipolar, schizophrenia, ADD, ADHD, those types of disabilities. We also work with people with physical disabilities. That could be anywhere from a bad back to maybe diabetes or any type of illness which they need help to get employment and keep employment. That's the major thing. This is employment month awareness and that's the entire Nebraska VR's goal is to get people employed into the work force.

Amy: Fantastic. And do you think people are aware of what a need there is to have a service like this in the area?

Charlene: It really does help a lot of the people that need that extra help. They need help for advocating with employers. They need help for training. They need help meeting their necessity needs, maybe some interview clothes. We help them with interviewing questions, we help with applications and get them employed into the workforce.

Amy: Again, that is October 12th at the new location at 203 E Stolley Park Road in Grand Island.
