Nebraska outlines plan for Republican River compact

It may not be good news for Nebraska farmers, but it could fend off further legal action in the Kansas-Nebraska water wars.

In a lengthy conference call, Nebraska natural resource officials told counterparts in Kansas and Colorado how they plan to comply with the Republican River compact in future dry years.

Under the Nebraska plan, groundwater would be pumped into the river to increase the flow into Kansas.

It also would take some Nebraska farmland out of irrigation.

Kansas has argued that Nebraska needs to stop irrigation from hundreds of wells near the river.

All sides will get back together before the end of the year to agree on the plan.
