New Hastings police chief officially starts

After 38 years of service with the Grand Island Police department, Pete Kortum officially began his first day as Chief of the Hastings Police Department.

Monday started off with several meetings at City Hall, paperwork and getting familiar with department staff.

Chief Kortum says while he plans to implement some changes, getting input from staff will be his first order of business.

"I want to ask them all to tell me if they were me, what's the first thing you'd do or one of the first things you'd do? And that'll be my marching orders. That will tell me what we need to look at next. It'll come from them. It's not going to come from me," said Kortum.

Kortum says another value he wants to continue to push is trust - a characteristic Hastings PD already has that he wants to build upon.
