Omaha senator proposes hydroelectric dam study

An Omaha Senator wants a $2 million study done on the feasibility of a hydroelectric dam on the Platte River. But officials near the potential site say no.

Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh told the Legislature's Appropriations Committee that officials should look at the project now as a future power source for Nebraska.

But critics from the city of Ashland say the project would force people out of their homes and remove valuable farm land from property tax rolls.

They say even discussion about the bill (LB808) creates unrest among citizens and threatens the town's economic growth.
