Opening statements shed details on Oldson murder trial
It'll be the talk of Howard County for the next two weeks. Tuesday, was day two of the murder trial against John Oldson. It began with opening statements.
And, the prosecution started to paint their picture of what happened the night Catherine Bear was killed. Tuesday in Howard County in the trial of John Oldson, the man accused of killing 31 year old Catherine Beard, opening statements were read and witnesses testified, including one of Cathy's close friends. John Oldson was wearing a gray shirt with black pants and thick glasses, taking notes throughout the trial. His mother, Ann Rassmussen, sat in the middle of the courtroom. Prosecutor Matt Lierman with the Attorney General's Office opened Tuesday morning by describing Cathy as petite standing 5'2", about 100 pounds. A loner, with few friends who spends some of her time at the bar. He says John told Cathy he wanted to make love to her that night, but Cathy said no. Oldson even grabbed Cathy's wrist to get her into her truck but says she pulled away. He says Oldson mentions a pickup but has conflicting descriptions of the drivers. The prosecution says this is a story of a man who was rejected and couldn't hand it and killed a woman. However, the defense chief council James Mowbray, says Oldson saw a dark pickup in the alley and sees Cathy talking with two males and that Oldson went home. Mowbray added that another witness saw Cathy in a truck with two men, driving westbound. They say forensic evidence shows her injuries are consistent with a vehicle pedestrian collision. On May 31, 1989, Charlene Whitefoot remembers seeing her good friend Cathy at the tavern talking with Oldson. She receives a phone call later that night that Cathy is missing. She calls Oldson who says he doesn't know anything. Whitefoot reports Cathy missing later that night. A day or two later Oldson returns to the bar and says, why did you have to go and report Cathy missing? If a dead body comes floating down the river we all know who they are going to blame. Witnesses will testify again Wednesday. Cathy's sister also testified Tuesday, as well as Diane Fischer who saw Oldson with his arm around Cathy at the bar that night. News 5 will continue to cover the trial of John Oldson for the next two weeks and bring you updates. |
