Preview of our Decision 2012 Hastings Mayoral Race
Continuing our Decision 2012 election coverage, we look at the mayoral race in Hastings.
Current Mayor Vern Powers is vying for reelection against opponent Emilio Llanes. One big issue that's facing the city is drilling by the EPA. You may remember the eleven green circles painted across downtown Hastings, where holes were to be drilled. The Environmental Protection Agency wanted to test the groundwater for contaminants, specifically dry cleaning residue. How do the candidates respond? "Right now the EPA is always an issue," said Mayor Powers. "They're always trying to take money from us, so we always have to be vigilant about that and we're working on that. They have different programs all the time. I'd like them to work with us more than just trying to fine us all the time and that's what they seem like they do." "EPA has been on our back and I think it's time to do something positive and be ahead of the EPA," said Llanes. "I don't know there are so many questions, which is why I believe I need to have somebody specialize in that area." Monday night on News 5 we'll hear more from the candidates, including whether they think more new businesses should move to Hastings. |
