Protesters gather across the Tri-Cities
The issue has reshaped political beliefs across the nation, dividing much of the United States into pro-life or pro-choice.
Cities across the nation, including demonstrators in Hastings, rallied against abortion. It's nationally known as Life Chain. Nearly 500 pro-life protesters rallied down Burlington Avenue Sunday afternoon. It's a divisive topic. While protesters were calm, they were straight forward about their beliefs. Church affiliations, residents of Hastings and pro-life organizations lined up and down Burlington Avenue. Teenagers like Valley Cook and Valerie Weber carried their signs with a common message. "Every child should have the chance to grow up, you're taking that away when you abort your children," Cook said. "I think it's tragic that we're not willing to ensure the dignity of human life from the beginning to the very end," Weber said. Stretched down Burlington Avenue, it's not the typical loud and hostile protest. The intent is to form a prayer chain. "We support life versus killing the babies," said protester Linda French. In 1973 Roe v. Wade passed, giving women the liberty to make a choice. Some believe women have the right to decide what happens to their bodies, but on Respect Life Sunday, pro-choice isn't an option. "We need to reserve Roe v. Wade and protect our unborn," said Connie Consbruck with Nebraska Right to Life. "There have been over 55 million children killed by legalized abortions since 1973." Forty years later, the law remains a rather complex and debatable topic. "I just believe that a fetus is a baby and not some kind of glob," French said. "As a parent of adoptive children I believe there are alternatives to abortion," said protester Roger Eigenberg. "Second of all there are many families who would like to have a baby to adopt." As part of the protest, some picketers gathered at a pork feed to benefit the Hastings Pregnancy Resource Center. Linda Spitz of Glenvil doesn't hesitate to speak what she believes is the truth. "It's just an easy out and its not easy," Spitz said. "You have to live with that for the rest of your life." Protests were also held in Grand Island and Kearney Sunday. There will be a march on January 22nd, 2013 in Lincoln for the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. |
