Programs for youth at Hastings Salvation Army

by Amy West

Major Abe Tamayo from the Hastings Salvation Army stopped by News 5 to tell us about how youth get involved with TSA.

Amy West: Abe Tamayo joining me now from the Hastings Salvation Army. We want to talk a little about the youth programs they have going on. Abe, can you tell us about your junior soldiers?

Abe Tamayo: Sure. Junior Soldiers is kind of like a confirmation class in church traditions. Children become full members of the Salvation Army and they go through a course that we teach called Junior Soldiers believing they are soldiers of Christ, soldiers of the cross, that we bring forth the message of Christ to the world around us and a war against sin and oppression. And so they become junior members of the church and this past Sunday we enrolled a graduating class of 8 Junior Soldiers.

Amy: Is that more or less than normal?

Abe: It's more than normal, but we graduate those classes pretty frequently. So it's a good size class, but it's a good quality teaching that takes place. Good bible instruction and those types of things. And they become junior members of the church as well, they actually become a member of the Salvation Army church. And that's on Wednesday evenings every week and then on Thursday we have a youth supper club and we do feed them supper. We pick the kids up from school and there are programs for litle girls and junior high age girls and little boys and junior high age boys. You have to be that age to participate, but there's good Christian teaching, good character development, good citizenship, those types of things that take place.

And, of course, on Sundays in our worship service we implement a lot of those people in our worship service to be part of that activity as well. So if parents want to have their children picked up from school and be part of our after school programs please give us a call or visit or website at tsahastings.com and you can contact us through that or click on our Facebook site (www.facebook.com/tsahastings) and see what's going on.

Amy: Alright, thank you so much, Abe.
