Protect your pet from theft
Most of the time we think of our dogs as protecting US, but sometimes they need our protection as well. There is a rise in the number of people stealing others' pets. Lynn Jasnoch from the Heartland Pet Connection spoke with News 5 about the disturbing trend.
Amy West: So where is this coming from? Why are people stealing pets? Lynn Jasnoch: Well, just like always, times are tough and people need money so if they may see a high dollar dog or a very popular dog in a backyard or a car they will steal it and there are so many easy ways to sell things anymore whether it's Facebook groups, Craigslist. It's an easy way to make a couple bucks and to sell an animal. You really have to be on your toes with your pets this time of year. Amy: What can you do to prevent this? Obviously, don't leave your animals in your car. What else can you do? Lynn: Microchipping is a good thing to do. That way the collar tags are always inside so if you ever get into a case where you need to prove identity that can be done. But buddy up. A lot of pets are stolen from cars or if you're out walking you may tie him to a light pole while you run into a store. Make sure somebody is with you so they can watch your pet. The best thing is to just leave them home in the house. Any time that they are visible they become a target for someone who needs a few extra bucks. They'll steal kids' bikes; they steal dogs. It's just part of society, unfortunately. Amy: Very unfortunate. And this brings up the next question: What do you do if your animal has been stolen? How do you get them back if you don't have a microchip or something like that? Lynn: Exactly. First and foremost, make sure you have a current picture of your pet. Just like the cat we brought today. It's a black kitten, but we can describe this black kitten 25 different ways. So a current photo is really what you need. Make sure you have front side, back side, side shots, everything, current weight. Always have your collars and tags on them and make sure you don't stop until you find that pet with posters, ads in the newspaper, posting on Facebook groups, Craigslist. Anywhere you can the information out there is going to help you get that pet back. |
