Picking out the perfect pumpkin
As the weather cools and the leaves begin to change colors, some are visiting local pumpkin patches to find the perfect gourds to carve or eat.
Helgoth's Pumpkin Patch in Saint Libory had plenty of visitors of all ages picking pumpkins and enjoying the day. While the choice of pumpkin can be as simple as a child saying, "I want that one," other guests were a bit more methodical in their approach. Either way, with over 20 varieties to choose from, any of the pumpkins will make a great pie after the carving's done. "A carving pumpkin, the kids always like to take a little bit bigger pumpkin," said co-owner Shelly Helgoth. "So they average anywhere probably from twenty pounds all the way up, Jack-O-Lanterns, up to 75 pounds this year. If you're going to make a pie pumpkin, those are usually a little sugar baby pumpkin, is what they call them. They're about five to seven pounds." The Helgoth farm will be open every weekend to the public until Halloween. |
