Boating is a favored leisurely pastime among many Nebraskans. But Sunday hundreds gathered at the Loup River near Palmer to watch river boating with a bit more power.

Over 140 racers from states as far away as Florida and Texas gathered for Thunder on the Loup.

The 9th annual event began Friday night with live music. The airboat competitions took place on Saturday with oval racing around the river.

Drag racing took place on Sunday with seven different categories.

"Hopefully this helps to generate some interest and bring more people to it, to compete, participate, and watch." said race official Darrell Stark.

Organizers say it was the largest turnout that they have ever had.
