Search for new lieutenant governor begins
The search began Monday morning for Nebraska's next Lieutenant Governor after the stunning announcement Saturday. Even with Sheehy's resignation, state senators returned to the capitol as the 103rd Nebraska Legislature continues.
It was business as usual here at the capitol Monday, floor this morning and then committee hearings Monday afternoon, but, of course, the talk all around the capitol was the resignation of Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy. Sheehy submitted his resignation of Saturday amidst allegations that he made thousands of phones calls to four different women over the past four years using his state issued cell phone. During a press conference Monday afternoon at the capitol he says that search is underway but that it could take some time before a new lieutenant governor is named. Several names have been thrown into the mix, but under state statues, a sitting state senator cannot be named a lieutenant governor, therefore, the names of Beau McCoy and Charlie Janssen, two of the names that have been floating as possible successors of Sheehy cannot take over that post. "As the lieutenant governor is the presiding officer of the legislature and Lt. Gov. Sheehy was here probably about half the time so we all got to know him and, frankly, I'm surprised," said Senator Steve Lathrop. Until that new lieutenant governor is named the governor's office will take over the day to day operations that the lieutenant governor was in charge of. The governor says it could take up to three weeks before a new lieutenant governor is named. |
