Senate candidates prepare for State Fair debate

Nebraska's senatorial candidates will meet in the debate ring at the Nebraska State Fair. GOP candidate Deb Fischer told the NBC station in Omaha that this debate will be the first of several debates against Bob Kerrey.

Kerrey has been eager to schedule debates against Fischer.

Bob Kerrey says, "There is much more interest in a debate today. Much more likely that people will understand what goes on in a debate even though they may not watch it because they can pick it up on the web today."

The details about the number and locations of the debates have not been worked out, but Deb Fischer says her campaign has other priorities.

Deb Fischer says, "Politicians like to talk a lot and a debate is a time when politicians can talk some more but this is retail politics, this is Nebraska and I can tell you from being in the state legislature for eight years that what I did then and what I'll continue to do when I'm out in my district and when I'm in this state is to listen to people."

The first debate between the candidates will be in August.
