Senator Janssen officially announces gubernatorial run

The race for the state's top job got a new contender Monday after Fremont Senator Charlie Janssen officially announced his candidacy for Nebraska's next Governor.

Janssen made the announcement in his home town of Fremont.
The 42-year-old Republican pledged to address tax reform, regulatory reform and economic development.

He said this campaign signals the beginning of a conversation with Nebraska voters on how to move the state forward. He says his decision to run was made some time ago.

"The decision was probably made about, in certain, about 3 months ago and there was no real one event that did it; it was just talking to Nebraskans," said Janssen.

The race for governor was thrown wide open earlier this month after the surprise resignation of Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy.

Sheehy had been considered the front-runner in the race. Political observers are doubtful of his plans to continue in the race.

As far as other big names who could enter: State Treasurer Don Stenberg, State Senator Steve Lathrop and former NU regent Chuck Hassebrook are all considered potential candidates in the gubernatorial race.
