Controversy in the state of New York is sparking one Nebraska lawmaker to take action here in the Cornhusker State.

The New York Journal News published the names and addresses of gun permit holders in two counties back in December.

Nebraska Senator Bill Kintner is proposing a bill that would prohibit the public release of information about gun registration, sales or use.
We took to the streets to see how local residents feel about the bill.

"I don't believe that the general public needs to know exactly who has a gun in their home because that just gives a big red light to a criminal, I know where there's some guns and I can go steal them, or I know who doesn't have a gun and I can go break into their house and not have any problems," said Hastings resident Cathy Winegarden.

Senator Kintner says the issue is about more than just knowing who owns a gun. His concern is that it would tell criminals who doesn't have a gun.
