Severe weather team talks with area students
Thursday will mark the one year anniversary of the first ever recorded tornado to touchdown in Nebraska in the month of February. It's a reminder that even though the ground is still covered in snow, severe weather season is right around the corner.
That is why the Great Plains Severe Weather Storm Chase Team is talking with local students to help raise awareness. They spoke to some Hastings Middle School students earlier Tiesday alongside SkyWatch 5's Meteorologist Joe Thompson and Katie Gauthier. From watches and warnings, to footage of tornadoes, and stories about storm chasing, students learned when to take action and what to do when the weather takes a turn. "Everybody should know, everybody should have a plan," said Jeff Crecilius. "We do live in Tornado Alley, it is something that is going to happen. You have to be prepared and be aware of it and it could save your life being ready for it," said Gordon Wheeler. Students at Tuesday's talk had just wrapped up a section on weather in their science classes. They also got to meet Precious, a dog that was saved in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, and now calls Doniphan home. |
