Sheehy on sales tax reform: "We need to be competitive"
Last week Governor Dave Heineman announced his desire to eliminate the state's income tax. He would in turn remove a number of sales tax exemptions making up for the lost revenue.
Thursday we caught up with Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy to get his opinion on why he agrees our tax system needs reforming. "Currently we're the 31st highest tax state in the country. We think that we need to be better to be competitive with our other states in the country who are taking some of our best and brightest and so by doing that it would make us more competitive," said Sheehy. Sheehy says the next step in the reform process is hearing from constituents. But he says without a change in sales tax exemptions, the state's income tax system will remain "mediocre." |
