by Josh Egbert

Since 1998 a local furniture company has been giving back to the community in the form of beds.

Through the years, Slumberland Furniture has donated 535 mattress sets throughout the Tri-City area. Tuesday they were at it again for their 14th annual Home for the Holidays event.

One of the recipients is a new shelter opening in Kearney.

Crossroads Rescue Mission, has served the Hastings area for the past 27 years. But it will be opening a brand new facility February 1st in Kearney.

Tuesday, the shelter received 29 beds.

News 5 spoke with the Executive Director Jerry Bumgardner who says the donations come at a perfect time.

"Just to have Slumberland come forward and say here's the beds for your facility, what more can you say," said Bumgardner.

Crossroads in Kearney will open their doors on February 1st.

"That's what we're all about is to get them off the street into a warm comfortable bed," said Bumgardner.

Crossroads Rescue Mission has served the Hastings area for the past 27 years, they've been looking to expand into the Kearney area for years.

"We have some board members that have come over for many years, just really praying that something would open up in Kearney," Bumgardner said.

Their prayers were answerd.

Tuesday, they moved one giant step closer to opening their doors with the donation of 29 new beds

"To be able to give back, we are blessed and to be able to bless other people is awesome," said Gayle Bonnes, Slumberland.

Some of the Tri-City Storm players took a break from the penalty box.
And, helped bring the beds into the new facility on 39th street.

"They are here to help provide some of the muscle power, they're putting bunk beds together, bringing in dinning tables, setting up dinning chairs," Bonnes said.

Crossroads wasn't the only recipient of new beds Tuesday. Slumberland also donated beds to several children.

"Kids that are without their own bed who are sleeping on the floor and we're delivering new mattress sets to them to help them get up off the floor," said Bonnes.

Exchange Bank also made a donation to help supply the beds.
In total Tuesday, nearly 60 frames, mattresses and box springs we're donated.
