Slumberland makes homes for the holidays
Families and children in need received a special gift from Slumberland's annual Making Homes for the Holiday's program.
It's something you look forward to laying your head down on that pillow every night. For one local family it's exactly what they had marked on their Christmas wish list. A house isn't a home without a warm bed to sleep in at night. For Holly Hasbrouck and her family life has been a struggle for the past seven months. "This summer on June 11th we had a house fire and of out all things our cat started it we had a gas stove and she must of, when she jumped off hit the burner, the knob," said Holly Hasbrouck, Recipient. The extensive heat and smoke destroyed everything. The kitchen, carpet, and beds. Only the dining chairs and table remained. Since the fire, Hasbrouck's husband and five children have been living with family and friends "Slept in a recliner, on a couch, on the floor," said Hasbrouck. But, after a phone call Tuesday morning their lives took a cozy turn. "Ms. Mosley nominated our family as one that was in need of some beds," said Hasbrouck. Hasbrouck was in need of twin beds for her two sons. "I was ecstatic I kind of wanted to cry," said Hasbrouck. Kearney public schools chose seventeen families in the Kearney area to receive a bed and the Tri-City Hockey Team delivered each bed to the homes. "We work a lot with families that have experienced often times crisis some sort of transition that has displaced them," said Melissa Craig, KPS Social Worker. Slumberland Furniture and Exchange Bank helped make the donation possible. "60 total beds will be going out over the two days in the communities," said Gayle Bonnes, Owner of Slumberland. After seven months of more lows than highs, things are slowly coming together for Hasbrouck. "Power restored, utilities restored," said Hasbrouck. Holly hopes to be home just in time for Christmas and maybe for breakfast in bed. Work and school kept Hasbrouck's husband and children busy. This is Slumberland's 15th year participating in Making Homes for the Holidays. 45 families will be donated a bed. |
