Snow keeps students away from school

Last week's snow storm caused districts all across the area to cancel classes on Friday, but students in Hastings Public Schools weren't so lucky.

The decision to keep the schools open came after crews were able to clear snow from the parking lots and sidewalks by about 4:00 am Friday morning.

But not everyone made it to school. Only about 70-percent of the student population was in class.

"There's always about 5 percent, maybe upwards of 7 percent, of the population that are just home because of illnesses and other circumstances. We honor their choices, but that was a day of attendance that kids missed," said Hastings Public Schools Superintendent Craig Kautz.

Along with Hastings, Grand Island Public schools also held classes on Friday.
