We all know that heating a home this time of year can get expensive.
It's why some homeowners are looking into alternatives.
Friday, community members were able to attend a free seminar at Central Community College to learn more about solar air, water, and electric systems.
While solar energy can provide an affordable option, it isn't the final solution.
"Everybody has the idea that if we get solar on our house we eliminate our utility bills. Well, they need to realize that you need to weatherize your house and seal your house up and make your house energy efficient so that solar actually works in your house," said Energize Nebraska member Mike Holthaus.
Holthaus says that if your house is weatherized, switching to solar energy can save as much as 40 percent.
And if you change your lightbulbs to be more energy efficient and switch to energy star appliances, you can save up to 60 percent on your energy bill.
The event Friday was provided by a grant received from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.
Central Community College offers courses that community members can enroll in to learn more about solar energy.
