Spady dealership acquires Hastings Kerr Chevrolet
It's a move more than a year in the making and gives one of the area's largest car dealers even more stock. Tuesday morning, Jerry Spady Cadillac GMC has become Hastings exclusive Chevrolet dealer after acquiring Kerr Chevrolet.
"I want the franchise to do well, I want Chevrolet to do well," said Jim Kerr. For more than 70 years, Kerr Chevrolet has been providing the Hastings area with cars, trucks, and SUV's. But that all ends Tuesday as Kerr Chevrolet is no more. "It's the right thing to do and it's the right time to do it and I wish them all the success in the world and I hope my employees all do well there," Kerr said. Jim Kerr has been a part of the family business for more than 46 years, but at the age of 66, he says it's time to move on. "Now that I'm of retirement age I'm looking forward to doing some other things it's time to move on," said Kerr. As Jim sets his eyes on the future, so is the dealership down the street. "Everything moves out here starting today, will take up probably about a week," said Jerry Spady. Jerry Spady Cadillac GMC, a fixture in the Hastings area since the 1950's, is now the official Chevy dealer for the city. "We've been working on it for about a year," said Jerry. "It got really heavy here in the last 30 to 60 days," Greg Spady said. Jerry Spady did not buy the Kerr dealership, but rather acquired the rights to sell Chevrolet. "Start today fresh, selling cars called Jerry Spady Chevrolet GMC Cadillac," said Jerry. Kerr Chevrolet began back in 1954. Jerry Spady began business in 1959. For more than 50 years they competed against each other. "We've known each other for a long time, been competitors for a long time, but it's always been a friendly competition," said Kerr. All 21 of Kerr's employees will move to Jerry Spady's starting this week. "My employees have always been more like family and we've been very blessed over the years to have some great employees," Kerr said. The end of an era for one dealership and a new beginning for another. "And I think we'll continue to do better with Chevrolet," said Jerry. Kerr Chevrolet will be holding a liquidation sale over the next few weeks to sell their remaining used car inventory. As for their location, they're still looking into whether to sell or lease the building. |
