For just a few weeks every spring the Platte River Valley becomes home to hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes. The birds stop in Nebraska during the northward journey to their nesting grounds in Canada, Alaska and Siberia. But Nebraska's corn fields and the Platte River make for a comfortable stop.

Also starting this weekend is the month long Prairie Winds Art Center show "Spirit of the Cranes." Artist Cynthia Duff joined News 5 Thursday morning to talk about the event.

Cynthia Duff: It's great to be here.

Amy West: And this is one of your works. Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Cynthia: It is. At Prairie Winds Art Center Rick Rasmussen and I are going to be doing an exhibit there and at Crane River also. This particular piece, we collaborated together and he did the photograph and I painted my fracturing on top of it. So it's very unique and different.

Amy: And what else are we going to see at the "Spirit of the Cranes" art show?

Cythia: Well, we're going to see a lot of my work that's on wood of the sandhill cranes. I've studied their behavior and really enjoy painting them.

Amy: What's so inspiring about the sandhill cranes for you?

Cynthia: For me, it's their behavior. It's their character. It's very human-like and I just see this romance and this big party that they're flying in for and it's just a very special time of the year around here. We're going to be doing - both Rick and I have donated a piece to the young birders group through Crane River and so we've got pieces over there too and we're auctioning this off for a fundraiser so it'll be fun. I've also done an exhibit that's called "Here's Cheers" and it's on a different light. It's all humor. It's animals dancing and having fun with each other so that will be at the Chocolate Bar a couple doors down also.

Amy: Sounds fantastic. We want to make sure people know where to go. It's tomorrow starting at 5:30, correct?

Cynthia: 5:30 to 8:30. And I also will be at Crane Trust on Saturday 1:00 to 4:00.

Amy: Fantastic, an opportunity to meet the artist. Thank you!
