Special Report: "Making Do" - Style on a Budget"Making Do"
What if you could buy an Oscar de la Renta jacket for fifty bucks or a vintage Timex watch for eight? Well, you can, if you know how to shop.
In the last part of our special report "Making Do" we prove that you can look like a million bucks by spending just a few bucks. "A Zara shirt for seven dollars. Diesel jeans for forty," said The Black Market manager Toby Burnham. Just a couple deals you can get at The Black Market-a consignment shop in Downtown Lincoln. "We carry everything from like GAP, Banana Republic, Express and Abercrombie to Diesel," Burnham said. The Black Market charges roughly a third of the original retail value. "We get really amazing items in here and we price them fairly inexpensive so you can get really awesome designer pieces at a really cheap price," Burnham said. "I'm picking up an outfit for my daughter's graduation and I'm probably saving $50 or $60 by picking up a skirt or top here," said customer Kim Gregg. Black Market Manager Toby Burnham says in recent years sales have grown 30% annually. He attributes this rise in customer growth to the slow economy. They have a better awareness of finding the same valued items at a much cheaper price. Customers like Fazela Gaylani-who shops at The Black Market at least once a week. "The prices very nice and the clothing is very nice, gorgeous. Romantic stylish. This is better than the mall or TJMaxx or somewhere. This is the best," Gaylani said. So the old saying rings true, just with a twist... One woman's trash is another woman's treasure. The Black Market sells clothing for men, women and children. Its clientele typically ranges from 16 to 30. |
