It's a vital cause targeting the prevention of substance abuse among teenagers. The local organization - ASAAP- held a coalition meeting Friday morning.

ASAAP stands for Area Substance and Alcohol Abuse Prevention. It operates in Adams, Clay, Webster and Nuckolls counties.

Speakers included the Lieutenant Governer Rick Sheehy and representatives from Hastings College and Central Community College.

The drug of most concern? Alcohol.

"We survey through some behavioral risk surveys, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th graders across the state. And they talk about binge drinking; they talk about where they get access to their alcohol, how often they're drinking, are they drinking and driving, or riding with adults and friends that are drinking and really the data should be alarming," said Sheehy.

Pain medication addiction is reaching epidemic levels in Nebraska.
This is according to a report by the University of Nebraska Medical Center released Friday.
