Surprise snow blankets Hastings
If you live in Hastings you may have been surprised to see snow when you woke up Friday morning.
Drive just out of town and you'd find the snow didn't even touch the surrounding areas. That's because of a few very specific factors creating the perfect storm. The industrial stacks just east of town are to blame for the flurries. "When we have a layer of low clouds or fog like we had today and temperatures near freezing, maybe slightly below, the increased moisture, maybe just a little bit of mixing of the clouds from the exhaust coming from those facilities, that basically makes a very, very small, tiny area where we can condense the moisture and form it into snow flakes," said Mike Moritz, National Weather Service. In European countries this is often referred to as "Beer Snow" because it happens around giant breweries. We also saw a lot of "frozen fog" on the trees out there. Another piece to weather puzzle that made outside Friday look like a winter wonderland for some of us. |
