Sutton Police Chief Tracey Landenberger is defending himself after an 18 page report was released by the state auditor identifying possible misuse of city funds.

But, a former Sutton police officer is saying Landenberg is being dishonest and the city knows what's going on.

The state audit report has been forwarded to several agencies including the Nebraska Attorney General. But ex Sutton deputy Tom White told News 5 what he witnessed going on while working at the police department.

"Purchased firearms through the city. He would then trade them in or sell them, pocket the money, whatever profits were there, if any profits," said White.

Tom White worked as a Sutton police officer from 2008 to 2010.

2008 was the same year Chief Landenberger was appointed.

Landenberger denies using funds for personal use.

"The funds were used as it says in the audit. That's all I can say about that, what was said in the audit for what was bought was something that was done has been done for years before I had even been here," said Landenberger.

White claims he and other residents attempted to contact the city regarding the matter but the information fell on deaf ears.

"They knew about it this; should be no surprise to them," said White.

New 5 also tried contacting city leaders, calls have not been returned.

"Typical small town politics," White said.

"I'm not the one that writes the checks. I'm not in charge of any of that. I don't do anything unless it's okayed," said Landenberger.

The state audit report has been forwarded to the Sutton City Attorney, the Clay County Attorney, the Nebraska Attorney General and the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission. No other details have been released on whether this is an on going investigation or whether charges will be filed.

Chief Landenberger is still working at the Sutton Police Department. And until those four agencies provide a response we won't know any further details. However, News 5 talked to residents throughout Sutton and based on what we're hearing a lot more is expected to evolve from this.
