Sutton residents get heated over police chief accusations
Whether at the local coffee shop or at the bank, word travels fast in the town of Sutton. That's held true in the latest town controversy.
Residents are in heated discussions about the alleged misuse of funds for the personal use of Sutton Police Chief Tracey Landenberger. News 5 has received overwhelming feedback from viewers. Chief Landenberger says the audit is a misunderstanding of policies. While, a former member of the department claims he witnessed the misuse of funds. The string of comments on our website indicates that the town is divided on this issue. KakalinaBecci says" "Just because someone tells you something is okay or allows you to do something doesn't make it right. Furthermore, if you are placed in a position where you have the responsibility to uphold the law, you should have really clear sense of what is right and what is wrong." DramaAgain30: "Pretty sure an 18 page report would not be lies. I'm afraid this is only the beginning of what's going to come." Ccresident90 says: "KHAS is being used by Tom as a way to seek revenge for sour grapes in Sutton. Many people affected negatively by Tommy are trying to move on with their lives and do not appreciate his drama." There are allegations White has a criminal history. Phelps County confirmed to News 5 that former Sutton Police officer Tom White was arrested in September for 3rd degree domestic assault. As part of a plea agreement, he was placed on probation for six months. As far as the lack of monitoring city funds and possible improper use, the case has been forwarded to several agencies for review. News 5 contacted the Nebraska Attorney General's office. They have received the report. And at this time that's all the information they can provide. Typically, that isn't unusual during an investigation. These cases take a lot of time and usually we don't get an update until the investigation is completed. |
