Tablet technology booms in the classroom
The new technologies that we can't wait to for our homes and offices are emerging in the classrooms. That includes Grand Island Northwest High School where iPads are wiping out the use of textbooks.
At Northwest High School in Grand Island, every student received an Apple iPad at the start of the new school year. So now, everything those students and teachers were once exposed to through textbooks happens right on their iPads. No more chalk boards or white boards. "Education is changing so much and technology has become a big part of learning," said Technology Director Brian Gibson. iPads at Northwest High School have completely taken over the old methods of teaching. Teachers work through the problem step by step solving the problem digitally right in front of their eyes. "I can make a show real quick of what I would suggest they do instead of trying to type out what the steps would be to solve the problem," said teacher Lindsey Harders. 720 students have access to an iPad. Some use as many as 100 different applications to complete all their classroom assignments "I encourage them to record the lesson, actually, and then they can play it back especially when we review for test, record it so they can hear it and watch it again," Harders said. The app enables students to take their teachers home and it makes their work load a little lighter. "Instead of carrying, like, a huge math book around you can take pictures of the pages and so you have it right there and you can read your problem," said one student. "PS Score - it's a musical app we can put our sheet music into the app. It helps us so we actually never have to take our eyes off our director," said student Riley Shenk. Grand Island Senior High is also starting a program this week called 21st century learning. By January, 1,050 students will have access to iPads for only four major science courses. All students will have access to the iPads by 2013–2014 school year. |
