Governor Heineman throws out his two tax reform bills

It was just last week when hundreds of people let their voices be heard on the Governor's proposal to eliminate or at least reduce the state's Income tax.

But those proposals are now dead after the Governor asked the tax-policy committee to kill the plans.

Governor Heineman asked the Revenue Committee to table the tax proposals he first introduced during his State of the State address in January.

The governor now wants lawmakers to start a new, inclusive discussion over Nebraska's tax climate.

State Senators Beau McCoy and Brad Ashford sponsored the bills that drew protests from the agriculture industry that would have lost sales-tax exemptions.

The Governor's plan now is to begin a broader study of tax reform.

The Revenue Committee will hold hearings and briefings on tax reform beginning this session.
