Teen group celebrates life on Roe vs Wade anniversary
The 40th anniversary of Roe versus Wade is spurring controversy nationwide. Here in south central Nebraska, students at one local high school shared their pro-life message.
News 5's Lauren Conley was at St. Cecilia's Catholic High School Tuesday. A student group called Teens For Life made an announcement during each passing period. They gave a fact about abortion and a message that coincides with the beliefs of the Catholic Church. A lullaby...followed by a statistic. It's a carefully crafted message from St. Cecilia's Teens For Life. "We just want to point out that it's wrong and we should be protecting life at all stages," said senior Clare Clark. Clark has been a member of Teens For Life since she was in 6th grade. "I've always been pro-life. My family's really big in the pro-life movement and I've always wanted to help out and stand up for life," Clark said. While, the 40th anniversary of Roe V. Wade marks a huge landmark for some, it's a grim memorial for others. "It's something that you know, is not in keeping with our understanding of the dignity of the human person and the respect that everybody should have for each human person," said St. Cecilia High School Principal Fr. Lee Jirovsky. Roe versus Wade is not a part of the educational curriculum at St. Cecilia's. But, Father Jirovsky has a message for students on the anniversary of it's passing each year. "The one thing that I expressed to them was like, you are loved, and you are cared for and you are made from love and for love and to share that with others and the great experience is what we all long for," Fr. Jirovsky said. Pro-Life posters plaster the walls of the school. One poster, signed by students is a testament to their faith. "There's a greater thing in life, which is life itself." Father Jirovsky says he wants students to understand the ramifications of abortion: "If we pit mother against child, everybody loses." Pro-Choice supporters in the area stayed quiet Tuesday. News 5 tried to reach multiple family planning clinics in the area, but all declined to speak on the issue. Abortions in the state of Nebraska have been declining steadily. They're down almost 63% since 1991. It's a trend the whole country has seen. Many doctors attribute this to better access to contraception and family planning services. |
